Kindergarten – Mrs. Anthony

WELCOME TO KINDERGARTEN!!                    WEEK OF 1-15-18

Religion:Chapter 14: Jesus Gathers Friends. The children discover this week that when they reach out in friendship to others that they are also responding to God’s love too. They will learn about the special friends of Jesus called Apostles. They will hear stories about Jesus and His friends.

Reading: This week we begin reading all about bears both in fiction and non-fiction We will read different selections brought to us by “secret storytellers”. We will look again at the concepts of predicting the outcomes in fiction and cause and effect in situations the characters find themselves in. We will write sentences describing bears that are real and those that are nonfiction from storybooks, movies, and cartoons.   I am continnuing to evaluate and benchmark each student for his/her reading level. We will then develop leveled reading selections from the  A-Z program.

Phonics: We will work on the short and long o sound and sort them . The chunk “ow” will be identified as the long o sound as in snow, grow, etc. We are manipulating initial sounds in words as we switch the initial sound out for another sound to create new words. We will continue to work on rhyming words.

Language: We are using our sight words to orally read with fluency. We continue to identify nouns and verbs in the sentences we are reading and identify and sort nouns from verbs. We are writing more sentences using our sight words. This week we begin the third quarter list of words that I sent home last week to you. We will be introducing 5 at a time and use them in game centers and in morning work stations. Please be sure you send in your child’s new batch of playdoh. I sent the recipe home last week with your child in his/her folder.

SOCIAL STUDIES:  We will discuss what special days we will celebrate in January  and see a video on who Martin Luther King was. We will discuss how he spread his dream to the rest of the world.

SCIENCE: We will be concentrating on discussing the habitat of different kinds of bears, their eating habits, their body parts, the ways they defend themselves, etc.

Math: We begin topic 5 : Numbers to 20. We continue to count, read, and write numbers 11-20. We will concentrate on the formation of each number working on the directionality ( left to right) of each. The children will have to count more carefully as the larger sets of numbers make it easy to make careless mistakes when they count quickly.

ANNOUNCEMENTS:  Please remember that each child should be sending in their new batch of playdoh this week. I am sending the January book order home this week and it will be due next Tuesday, Jan 16th. We will celebrate bear week starting this week.  We will have Teddy Bear visitation day, teddy bear picnic day, secret  story tellers , and special treats as we learn all about bears!  We will learn a bear joke to share with you daily to practice memory skills so ask your child each night for the bear joke. A letter will come home Tuesday ( today) to let you know what we are up to .

Birthday Treats: We have 18 children in the classroom ( that number includes your child) when sending invitations or treats to school.

EACH CHILD SHOULD BRING A SNACK TO SCHOOL DAILY. YOU MIGHT WANT TO PACK 5 SNACKS IN YOUR CHilD’S BOOK BAG SO THEY WILL ALWAYS HAVE A SNACK AND YOU WILL NOT FORGET.
