Grade 1 – Mrs. Theresa Kelly
Week of October 23, 2017
I hope everyone had a super weekend. I had a great time talking with many of you at the auction on Saturday. The Halloween Party and Parade is this Friday, October 25, 2017. The students will wear their uniforms to school on Friday, and after recess we will begin to have them change into their Halloween costume for the party and parade. It is important to remember to work with your child at home with their addition and subtraction facts as well as with the Kindergarten and First Grade Sight Words. We spend time in class reviewing the facts and sight words but it is very important that you work at home with your child. Just a few minutes each evening and that will greatly help. For those of you that have been working at home with your child, Thank You! Thank you for your continued support. Have a great week!
SPELLING – The students will be introduced to the new spelling words from Unit #8, which we will focus on short “o”words. The test will be given on Friday. October 25, 2017. The words are as follows: not, hot, pot, got, box, and fox. I will send a copy of the list of spelling words home on Monday in your child’s red folder. This list can stay at home and your child can study the words from the list.
PHONICS – The students will name each picture, print the lowercase letter for it’s beginning sound and then print the lowercase letter for the ending sound.
LANGUAGE ARTS – The students will be introduced to the study skills of parts of books. We will not have any new sight words this week but please have your child practice their Kindergarten and 1st grade words.
GUIDED READING – We will continue to have each student share their book from their book report with the class. I promise all students will have an opportunity to share their book this week. Encouraging reading at home is a wonderful way to build your child’s self confidence. It is also very important that the students continue to practice their sight words at home. Please review with your child his/her Kindergarten sight words even if they knew them last year. I am just asking that you spend ten minutes each evening reviewing their Kindergarten and First Grade words. Thank you for your continued support.
MATH – The students will begin Chapter #4 in their Math series. We will begin to count on to add, starting with the greater number. The students will also begin to recognize doubles as a strategy for remembering sums. Please review your child’s doubles facts with them. The homework is just a review of what we went over in class each day. We go over the previous nights homework each day and the students are able to make any necessary corrections on their paper. I do not collect the homework but I do know if students have completed their homework assignment. The homework is as follows:
MONDAY – Worksheet 4 -1.
TUESDAY – Worksheet 4 – 2.
WEDNESDAY – Worksheet 4 – 3.
THURSDAY – Worksheet 4 – 4.
FRIDAY – Enjoy the weekend.
RELIGION – The students will describe how they feel when someone praises them and how we celebrate God’s goodness through prayer in Chapter 4.
SOCIAL STUDIES AND SCIENCE – Please view Mrs. Lasher’s web page.
PLEASE TAKE 5 – 10 MINUTES IN THE EVENINGS TO REVIEW WITH YOUR CHILD THEIR ADDITION AND SUBTRACTION FACTS. ALSO JUST A FEW MINUTES EACH EVENING REVIEWING THEIR HIGH-FREQUENCY WORD LIST. THANK YOU FOR YOUR CONTINUED SUPPORT.
PLEASE REMEMBER TO SEND ONLY ONE HEALTHY SNACK WITH YOUR CHILD EACH DAY.
WE HAVE 18 STUDENTS IN OUR ROOM THIS YEAR IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO SEND IN A BIRTHDAY TREAT.
PLEASE HAVE YOUR CHILD WEAR THEIR GYM CLOTHES EVERY TUESDAY.
WE WILL ATTEND THE ALL SCHOOL MASS THIS WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 23, 2017 AT 8:30AM.
